Pre-designed theatres are the specialty of Acoustic Smart Home theatre Interiors of Merrick, NY, which recently installed three such theatres in Westchester and one in New Caanan, CT, with the help of local dealers. Instead of staring with a blank slate, homeowners choose from eight theatre styles, which are customized to fit a homeowner's home and needs.

"You're not spending a ton of money because you're not doing all the custom woodwork," says Acoustic Smart's President and CEO Richard Charschan. Acoustic Smart theatres (averaging between $50,000 and $80,000) are made of its trademarked "acoustical architecture"—the same concept used in recording studios. They use fiberglass to absorb sound, reflective panels to reflect the sound, and diffuser panels to scatter it. "By placing these in the room, you're controlling the sound so that it's exactly the way the director intended it to be, rather than just bouncing it all over the place," Charschan says.
